About us

Computer Science for Social Good (CSSG) Group is a transdisciplinary research group at the Department of Computer Science involving academics, researchers and specialists in the domains of computer science, social policy, information systems and social change. We aim to bridge the gap between computing and social good (and avoiding harm). We focus on the development of new methods, tools and technology, with a strong emphasis on end-user evaluations,  to tackle complex societal challenges through research, innovation, capacity building and collaboration.

Our research is driven by the increasing demand for leveraging computer science sub-disciplines such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Applications, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Robotics  Technology, Internet of Things and Distributed Ledgers and Blockchain to develop life-changing solutions for existing and emerging social, ecological, political, cultural and economic challenges affecting underserved communities globally. To this end, our work is well-aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We  have  projects that address the following SDGs: No Poverty (SGD1), Zero Hunger (SGD2), Good Health and Wellbeing (SGD3), Quality Education (SGD4), Gender Equality (SDG5), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG9), Reduce Inequality (SDG10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SGD11), Responsible Production and Consumption (SDG12), Climate Action (SDG13) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG16). We work with a wide range of partners (e.g., higher institutions, research institutes, non-profits, government agencies, and social impact organisations) to utilise and pioneer  technologies, accessible and affordable for all,  that can have a positive societal impact.

Activities of the CSSG group include research, collaborative partnership building, technology development, innovation, usability evaluation and impact assessment as critical pathways for maximising societal impacts and advancing theory and practice. The work of the group also includes public engagement activities, capacity building and training and active student involvement through placement opportunities and social good ventures.
