Dr Vesco Paskalev
Senior Lecturer in Law

Elliott Jaques 076

Summary

Before joining Brunel in September 2019, Vesco Paskalev has been a lecturer at the University of Hull (2014-2019). Prior to this, he had been a researcher at EUDO Citizenship Observatory (now Global Citizenship Observatory) at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies in Florence, Italy. He obtained his first law degree from Sofia University and then an LLM in Comparative Constitutional Law from Central European University, Budapest. He has been visiting researcher at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford University (2003/4) and at the London School of Economics (2010) and obtained his PhD from European University Institute, Florence in 2013. His thesis studied the role of public reason and scientific argumentation in risk regulation and was awarded the European Law Faculties Association (ELFA) second prize for a thesis on European Law.

Vesco has worked as an advisor to the Committee of European Integration of the Bulgarian parliament (2002-2005) and as an adjunct lecturer in EU law since 2005. He had a brief stint as a practicing lawyer (2005-2008) and returned to academia in 2008. He was actively engaged with the green movement in Bulgaria and still occasionally advises environmental NGOs and writes complaints to the European Commission and the European Ombudsman for infringements of EU law, most recently on the scandal with the employment of the former Commission President Barroso at Goldman Sachs.

Vesco’s fields of interest are deliberative democracy, civic republicanism, comparative constitutional law, European Union law, risk regulation and environmental law and policy. Adopting the perspective of the Science and Technology Studies (STS) he conceives legal regulation, public participation and scientific argumentation as mutually dependent and studies how each of them affects and is affected by the other two.
