Teaching

Jessica is a fellow of the Higher Education Academcy, and currently Division Lead for English and Creative Writing. She convenes a number of modules, including The Nineteenth-Century Novel, Victorian Literature and Culture, and Reading, Research, and Writing. She also supervises final year undergraduate and MA dissertations, as well as doctoral students.

Activities:

Jessica's current research focuses on maternal bodies in nineteenth-century Britain. Her most recent book, (The History Press, 2023), explores this topic at length. Her current research further examines the maternal experience, with a specific focus on abortion in the Victorian period.

She has published widely on Victorian and neo-Victorian literature and culture.  Previous books include Neo-Victorianism and Sensation Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) and Victorian Sensation Fiction (Readers' Guide to Essential Criticism, Red Globe Press, 2019). She is Associate Editor for the journal Brontë’ Studies (Taylor and Francis), editor of a collection of essays on Mary Elizabeth Braddon (Rodopi, 2012), and co-editor of a major anthology on Women and Belief (Routledge History of Feminism series, 2012), and of a special issues of The Wilkie Collins Journal (2021) and Neo-Victorian Studies (2010).  Her work has been the subject of several podcasts, including and .
