At the MA Social Work graduation on 13 December 2018, Jason Codrington was awarded the prestigious 2018 annual Mary Seacole and CWSC Prize for Social Care. The award is given to the top social work student in the social work program. His MA dissertation was Exploring Factors that Impact Social Workers' Confidence and Competence when Supporting Religious and Spiritual Care for Older Adults. He conducted semi-structured interviews in a London-based local authority. Through thematic analysis, core concerns were identified in relation to key barriers and facilitators to practice addressing spiritual and religious needs.
Jason wrote: "I’m very grateful to have been awarded this prize for my academic achievements after two years of dedicated study for a Masters in Social Work. I enjoyed the course and it means a lot to have my work recognised in this way. My studies have been part of a career change, so the award was further validation of my decision to pursue social work.
It is an added honour to be awarded a prize named after Mary Seacole, someone whose bravery and interest in social justice was matched by an ability to find practical and innovative ways to help others. As someone who achieved so much in challenging contexts and circumstances, Mary Seacole is an inspiration for anyone with similar goals today. As such, this award really is something I will draw on as I embark on a new career in social work."
