SafeXtend: Developing a VR training platform for the construction industry

Ongoing

Improving safety and productivity in the construction industry with a new AI-powered VR training platform.

Background

The construction industry faces a significant challenge in providing scalable, skills-targeted training solutions.

Traditional training methods often fail to meet the dynamic and diverse needs of the workforce, resulting in a skills gap and reduced productivity.

There is a pressing need for innovative training approaches that can adapt to individual skill levels and provide immersive, scenario-based learning experiences.

The project

SafeXtend aims to address the challenges in construction training by developing an artificial intelligence-(AI) powered virtual reality (VR) training platform.

This platform will leverage advanced AI and VR technologies to create immersive, scenario-based simulations tailored to individual skill levels.

By simulating real-life construction environments and scenarios, workers can gain hands-on experience in a safe and controlled setting.

The platform will adapt to the user's progress, offering personalised feedback and adjusting the difficulty of the simulations accordingly. This approach ensures that training is effective and engaging, helping workers to acquire and retain new skills more efficiently.

The AI component of the platform will analyse performance data to identify areas for improvement and optimise training modules. This continuous improvement loop will help maintain high training standards and keep the content relevant to the latest industry practices.

Research impact

SafeXtend's innovative approach promises to revolutionise construction training by providing a scalable solution that enhances both safety and productivity.

Workers will be better equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques, reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall efficiency at construction sites.

Ultimately, this project aims to position the UK as a global leader in high-tech construction training solutions.

The SafeXtend project will significantly enhance the quality and effectiveness of training for construction workers.

Providing a scalable, skills-targeted training solution will help bridge the skills gap in the construction industry, leading to safer and more productive work environments.

This technology can be applied across various sectors within the construction industry, including residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.

Construction companies will benefit from reduced training costs and improved worker performance, while workers will gain valuable skills that enhance their employability and career prospects.

The broader impact includes increased efficiency and safety at construction sites, contributing to the overall advancement of the industry.
