Brunel students worked through the night to cover the general election, writing stories, interviewing candidates, covering live debates and broadcasting from the campus.

Students of journalism, history and politics teamed up to give local people inside access to the counts for the Hillingdon constituencies, covering interviews with the main candidates from Uxbridge & South Ruislip, Hayes & Harlington and Ruislip, Northwood & Pinner.

Amy Harrison, a second-year journalist student, said: “It was such an amazing experience. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do something quite like this again for a long time. It gives us that confidence for the future – I’m glad to get this opportunity.”

Students from the politics and history departments acted as researchers and data gatherers, and took part in round-table political discussions broadcast on Facebook.

The students broadcast online throughout the night, as well as producing content for local news website Hillingdon is Here.

James Nadal, editor of Hillingdon is Here, said: “The students tackled the challenge with great enthusiasm and really got stuck in. It was a very interesting night.”

Rachel Sharp, journalism lecturer, said: “It’s been a fantastic night. I’m so incredibly proud of all the students, who worked so hard around the clock to produce a huge amount of content. It’s been a great experience for them.”
