Two Brunel Design students have taken top honours at the international Red Bull Basement competition for an eco-washing machine that uses recycled show water to clear clothes.

Paramveer Bhachu and Joanna Power, final-year students at СʪÃÃÊÓƵ London, beat thousands of students globally to win the annual event, which showcases worldwide student innovation.

The winning idea, Lava Aqua X, tackles the sustainability issue of clean water with a washing machine that collects water from the floor of a shower, then filters it and reuses it to clean your clothes. It is portable and capable of washing clothes with less water and in a third of the time of a normal washing machine.

This year’s Red Bull Basement event was a virtual edition in which a record 3,800 student innovators from around the planet put forward their proposals to initiate positive change.

That list was whittled down to 38 finalists for a virtual, four-day Red Bull Basement Global Workshop, an immersive, collaborative experience in which teams could network with various leaders in their field.

It reached its climax with the top 10 teams making their final pitch to a panel of judges, Matthias Haas (founder/CEO of SuperSocial), Manjula Lee (founder/CEO of World Wide Generation) and Ruth Rowan (CMO, NTT) in a virtual reality production studio.

As a result of their win, the Brunel students will now be able to benefit from custom resources and contacts to more fully bring their idea to reality.
