Top things to bring in the UK as an international student

Posted: March 04 2021

Congratulations on making it so far and successfully securing a place at university.

The UK, especially London, is home to a very diverse community. It doesn’t matter which country you are coming from; you can always find your cultural cuisine, clothes, and household items here.

Three years back, when I was packing my stuff as an international student, moving abroad for the first time, I had no idea what to bring and what not to. Coming here, I realized that most of the stuff that I thought I would struggle to find here was actually available. Here are a few important things to note;

  • While starting to pack your objects, you must keep in mind that you do not include any items that are not permissible to take on board by your airline or items that may cause problems and delays in your entry to the UK.
  • Moreover, it would be best if you also referred to the respective airline guidelines to know more about the baggage allowance and keep in mind that the rooms provided in the university halls of residence are not that big and spacious. Therefore, it is better not to carry too many bags, as it not only makes your journey tiring but will also make commuting from airport to university difficult since you will be the one carrying, loading, unloading, and unpacking your bags on your own.
  • Another essential thing to note is that you do not need to carry items like duvets, pillows, and bedsheets, etc. as they are already provided in the university dorms.

Here is a list of some items that your packing list should necessarily contain:

Travel Documents

Essential documents to pack in your hand luggage before travelling include your passport, ticket, CAS letter, visa confirmation letter, accommodation license agreement, CV and references, id documents, educational documents and certificates, and some cash/bank card for any emergency. You can also carry your Tuberculosis test report and health insurance confirmation, just in case the authorities ask for it.

Clothing

Weather conditions in the UK are very unpredictable, as a few sunny days, cold winds, and unexpected rainy days dominate the weather. Therefore, it is good to bring some warm coats, jackets, gloves, and hats along. Do not forget to pack some clothes for smart-casual events, trainers, rain boots, slippers, a bathroom, and a hand towel set.

Electronics

Travel adaptors, earplugs, chargers, charging cables, and your laptop is among the few most important things to pack.

Toiletries

Shower gel, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, shaving set, makeup, prescription glasses, skincare products, jewellery, a small sewing kit, prescription medication, and copies of prescription are some of the essentials you should carry.

Others

The requirement of cutlery, kitchen appliances, and pans largely depends upon the type of accommodation you choose. Iron, ironing board, kettle, microwave oven, and toaster are normally provided in Brunel accommodation. Bringing a plate, bowl, cup, glass, pan, and some cutlery would be enough for your initial days; you can always buy more kitchen items as needed from your local shops. Bringing family photos, a notebook, basic stationery items, and small treats of your favourite snacks from your home country depends upon your personal preference and also on custom restrictions.

I hope you enjoy the great adventure full of new experiences during your stay in the United Kingdom!
