Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…
After graduating I was accepted to a Grad scheme at Dimension Data along with 15 others. I started on the Presales path but transitioned into Technical within a few months. I worked there for a year before getting head hunted for my current role, where I have been ever since.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
No day is the same. I travel a lot for work so I could be on a plane to Qatar or working from home. My role consists of configuring and troubleshooting a Linux based server, but the company I work for has a wide range of products, so every day is an opportunity to learn something new. I have been working in my current role for over one and a half years and still do not know everything.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Definitely the travelling. Last year I took 35 flights. Whenever I go to a nice place for work, I try to take a few days of annual leave so I can take full advantage of the paid for flights and see the country as opposed to going to work and coming back home.
How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?
The Careers team at Brunel is amazing. They helped me a huge amount in presenting myself professionally in interviews and on my CV. It definitely makes you stand out when you are just a piece of paper during the initial recruitment stages.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I chose to study at Brunel as I wanted to stay in London, but still go to a university that had a campus. Brunel has a very highly respected engineering department and that was one of the big factors as well. It ticked all the boxes for me. There is also a lot of extra-curricular stuff to get involved in, which is amazing.
What is your best memory of studying here?
My best memory of being at Brunel is all the lifelong friends I made. I’m still in touch with many people I met at university and we meet up quite regularly as well. I definitely made a lot of lifelong friends.
If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?
It would be to take advantage of all the extra-curricular activities that go on. University is not just about education it is a stepping-stone into the real world and being independent. You can get involved with a lot of things, from learning languages to playing sports. Don't restrict yourself to just the education.
What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?
Explore your options; the first job you find does not have to be what you do for the rest of your life. At such an early stage in your career you can move around easily. Try out different career paths and see what you like doing. When you don't have responsibilities such as kids and a mortgage etc. you can take those risks. Later on in life it’s much more difficult.
