Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel.
9 years teaching PE in state schools - Edgeware School & Bishop Douglass School. 1 year working in Sports management. 30 years working in Independent schools. St. Paul's Prep school - 11 years. Mill Hill Prep School 5 years as Deputy Head. 16 years working for a global education company. Headmaster of Salcombe Prep - 3 years. Headmaster of Downsend School - 5 years. Headmaster of Cumnor Boys School - 1 year. Executive Head of Clifton Lodge Prep - 5 years.
I also played rugby at a very high level. I played for Saracens for 10 years and captained them for 4 years. Also played for Middlesex, London Division England Students, British Colleges and the Barbarians.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
Meeting and greeting the pupils in the morning. Back-to-back meetings or appointments for much of the day. Events or meetings in the evening.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
Being a Head Teacher where you can have a positive impact on every child in your care. Also knowing that your decisions could be so important in the lives of the students
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
Playing sports to a very high level at Borough Road College and beyond gave me some very important skills to consistently perform at a high level. Also, the importance of working effectively as a team.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I attended Borough Road College, one of the very best PE colleges in the country. For me it was an easy decision, getting into such a strong Sports institution would open doors and give me more choices.
What is your best memory of studying here?
Being taught a very wide range of sports prepared me to teach them in schools. Also, being able to play sports to a very high level.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
Believe in yourself, follow your dreams and work hard. There is no substitute for hard work. Also, throw yourself into as many different activities as possible - a great way to meet like-minded people.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Try to network with other new graduates. This will give you a group of possible friends who are all going through similar challenges.
