Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…
Up and down. I found that no one would accept me for a position so I went into freelance contract work in different companies to gain experience. I contacted the Brunel Careers department to ask for help with my CV and cover letter; during this time, they were sent the HP graduate scheme and we worked on applying together. In the end, I was sent through the whole application process, invited for the 10-day selection process and then accepted for two positions on the HP graduate scheme - I am currently based in Spain and working as a Creative Designer. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them.
What does an average day at work involve for you?
Previously it was designing samples, marketing material and prepress, understanding the technical background of printing and presenting to customers, etc. Now I have just been promoted into a different team as the EMEA Graphic Solutions Business Brand and Agencies team as Creative Designer. I consult with brands and design agencies on how their products can be revolutionised by HP Digital Print - designing concepts exhibiting HP digital print for brands. In others words; designing for brands and consulting, advising and inspiring brands and agencies about the world of HP digital print.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
During my graduate scheme, I worked on a project for Vogue and was invited to attend the 1-year anniversary party of their new Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful. If you type my name into Google, you can find the pictures! This was a great exposure project for HP externally and for me internally.
How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?
My degree course has obviously helped, as having the vast range of exposure to many different companies in the industry gives such a great network of people to draw upon when applying for jobs. Also, the Brunel Careers department is second to none and I wouldn't have been given the job without the help I received from Raj Sidhu and Alison King: I owe everything to them.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
It was the top University for Design and I only wanted to go to the top. What sold Brunel to me was the way they phrased their words - they said "if you choose us..." This was the decider; having someone give you the option - the more humble, but highly recognised, University for Design in the UK. That's what made me choose Brunel. I would always recommend Brunel.
What is your best memory of studying here?
There was a brief in my second year proposed by Dyson about designing solutions to problems caused by extreme weather. I won the chance to develop my product for Dyson and then we got to pitch it at their HQ. It was an amazing experience and I have never forgotten it.
If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?
Be humble. Just because you go to a great design university doesn't mean that you are the best. Bring yourself down to earth. Work with your fellow students to find the best solution. Work hard. Don't expect things to happen, you have to work for everything. Help other people. Be the Brunel I signed up for: Humble, hardworking, non-elitist, technical and creative.
What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?
Keep focused. If you work hard, it doesn't mean you'll get good grades but it will discipline you into a better work ethic. Read your deliverables and work hard but efficiently to what is being required of you. Don't over work because other people have done more. Focus on your own life. Keep your head up when all others and losing theirs. Be there for other people. Be humble!
