Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…
I started my first company whilst at Brunel. I was fortunate enough that when I graduated my business made enough money to pay me full time. The business has expanded over the last few years and I now have 12 full-time staff. It has been very demanding and I find myself working a 7 day week but it is worth it.
What does an average day at work involve for you?
As I have expanded, I have had to take a back seat from coaching and now I am in the office. My main day to day role is replying to emails, expansion ideas, spot checks on staff, the general day to day running of the business. The additional free time gave me the opportunity to start my 2nd company, In2Construction.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Good question - just steady and continual growth. Each year setting a target of increasing by 1 full-time staff member and making it happen. I pride myself on our reputation so receiving good feedback from schools we work in is also a highlight for me. I also did some work for a local charity called Limbcare for amputee's which was very rewarding.
How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?
Brunel was some of the best years of my life. It was a great place to network and meet new people and the lecturers gave me the encouragement to start up my own business. It helped me expand my knowledge in sports and PE which has helped me in a number of ways in my own business.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
It was a 40 minute commute so I was able to come home at weekends to run my business. I would recommend it in a sporting capacity due to its facilities. It was the best Uni I went to visit by far. My experience was positive - everyone was friendly and helpful.
What is your best memory of studying here?
The most enjoyable day was Wednesdays! It was fixture day and I was lucky enough to represent Brunel for all 3 years for the football team. Varsity was also a very good memory I had of Brunel. I believe we beat St. Mary's 5 years in a row whilst I was there. Also the late night library trips ….
If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?
We all get the same 24 hours in the day. Manage your time to get the most out of your day. It frustrates me when people say 'they don't have time'. Everyone has time you just need to plan your day better. At Uni you have to be self-motivated so I think it’s also important to stick to deadlines.
What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?
Get as much experience as you can in your chosen career path. Go above and beyond at the beginning to get recognised and be a 'yes' person. Say yes even if you’re unsure as you will find a way. I would also say find out your main passion so you don't waste time going into a job / career that isn't for you.
