Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?

This is a once in a lifetime experience to be given an opportunity to study at Brunel with all the academic and career opportunities this offered. The best of them is that I met my life partner in the UK in the process of doing my Masters! The oil industry has been a declining industry due to climate change so the new graduate intake has been low since 2018. This experience gave me the confidence to believe in myself to form my own company. The lecturers in my department had a way of challenging my initial beliefs of engineering principles and helping me come to new conclusions that, still to this day, help me in my career.

What does a typical day at work involve for you?

On a typical day, I report to work by 8am and firstly go through my email inbox to respond to emails from clients and co-workers. Subsequently, I go through my to-do list, highlight unfinished tasks, and then schedule my tasks for the day. I talk to clients through different projects and connect them to the best companies to execute their requests depending on their various budgets. Sometimes these meetings are via Zoom or in-person.

What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?

Having that self-belief to start my own company and how far I have come with it.

How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?

I gained a top-tier teaching and learning experience at Brunel and graduated with an internationally recognised master’s degree; a programme accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Energy Institute of the UK. I expanded my knowledge and skills and developed my professional brand as an Oil and Gas Engineer. Thus, my experience at Brunel helped me in starting my consultancy company.

Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?

I chose Brunel for its diverse and multicultural approach to education.

What is your best memory of studying here?

My best memory of studying at Brunel is how multicultural and diverse the student population was. This allowed me to connect with different people from different cultures around the world. I also met my life partner Jennifer in the process!

If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?

I encourage current students to make the best of their time at Brunel. Your experiences during your time at Brunel will shape you for the rest of your life, so live in the moment and enjoy every bit of campus life and interact with your fellow students and make lifelong friendships. You should also build lasting relationships, as this will expand your professional networks post-graduation during your job hunt and you will become an ambassador of Brunel.

What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?

Focus on the essentials. We are currently living in a vastly changing world in terms of politics, social interactions and economics. Brunel has already laid the foundations by providing you with a diverse and multicultural environment of people from all walks of life with different competing ideas to shape your view of the world, so you can give yourself the best chance to thrive anywhere your career takes you in any part of the world post-graduation. Our daily interactions at Brunel have already prepared us for the challenges ahead, so be confident and face it head on.
