Kyle: Physiotherapy BSc placement experience

My placement within a community Rapid Response Team really pushed me to ensure I was doing the most effective assessments possible. While I have seen less patients overall than on other placements, being the first practitioner to support an acutely unwell patient really challenges your clinical reasoning.

Tell us about the recent placement you carried out?

I was on placement within a community Rapid Response Team in Kensington and Chelsea which has been a great learning experience for me. The team’s aim is to prevent hospital admission, manage deterioration and to enable a safe transition between hospital and home.

What did you find most challenging on your placement?

This placement has challenged my view of the scope of physiotherapists and has really developed my ability to prioritise patients, plan my sessions and clinically reason through presenting problems. I initially thought that having up to two hours to work with each new patient would be easy, but this was not the case! Due to how unwell the patients are, their specific needs and the fact that I was often sharing this time with other multi-disciplinary team members meant the two hours I spent with them actually went very quickly.

What did you learn from your placement?

This placement really pushed me to ensure I was doing the most effective assessments possible. While I have seen less patients overall than on other placements, being the first practitioner to support an acutely unwell patient really challenges your clinical reasoning. It has been a great placement, with a very supportive team that I’ve found really beneficial.
