Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
Since I graduated in 2015, I have worked with three medium-large companies. My previous employer was Vodafone Group where I implemented and managed a global security driven analytical project and was recognised multiple times for work excellence. Whilst working with Vodafone Group, I completed my MSc in Software Engineering at UWL and graduated with a 1st class degree. I was able to publish my first journal in ML and then joined Rackspace last year where I have been recognised for my work ethic and promoted to a senior role. I still ponder over the experience I gained from Brunel, which is enormous.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
I help drive all the business operations activities in EMEA and Middle East and Africa region. I analyse large dataset and provide business intel to the business in order to drive sales success. I am involved in refining data, processes and making systematic enhancements and collaborating with enterprise leadership level stakeholders in all area of the business
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
Alhamdulillah! I thank God for all the achievements and progressive growth in my track record. Wherever I go I can stand out in the crowd.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
I would say having a BEng degree gives you an upper hand; once you start working you will get to know the benefits. Having the right degree is a preparation for real world challenges and Brunel was the right place for me. I uncovered so much hidden talent during my time at Brunel and the confidence I built will be lifelong.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
Brunel opens new avenues to students. You can uncover real talent and be proud of yourself at Brunel. It gives a platform to all type of students. You do not have to be the smartest or the bravest; it embraces people from all backgrounds and cultures, as diversity is built into the heart of Brunel. Brunel did not just give me a degree, it helped me practice my faith in a most respected manor. I am thankful to Brunel for everything. I have no doubt you will have your own.
What is your best memory of studying here?
I can still remember the lectures from Professor John Stonham. He thought us to always ask ‘why?’ - or in French ‘Pourquoi?’ The way of his teaching is impossible to forget. Most of the time, you find answers within the question and you just need to ask why. This is my best memory.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
My only advice is to not wait until you graduate to apply for a job. I know it’s an extremely difficult thing to do during your final semester, exams and the thesis. I know you deserve a break, but try to secure something before you plan a holiday. The world outside operates on a first come first serve basis. A company won’t offer you a job if your CV is not on the table. Don’t underestimate yourself and the degree you hold. Remember your interpersonal skills may worth more than someone with a PhD qualification.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Do not stop learning and keep your LinkedIn profile up to date. Get to know your desired role well. If you are on a technical path like myself, then keep practicing, as over time you will start forgetting faster than you can imagine. The secret of success is not to learn everything that technology has to offer, but rather improve your existing skills and get better at it every day. Good luck.
